Building a Stronger Community for Future Generations

At St Merkorious Charity, sustainability is more than an environmental commitment. It is a promise to create lasting social, economic, and environmental impact for the communities we serve.

As demand for food relief and community support continues to grow, we are committed to developing sustainable solutions that reduce waste, strengthen community resilience, and create pathways for long-term wellbeing.

Fighting Food Waste

Every year, large quantities of quality food are discarded while many families struggle to access nutritious meals.

Through partnerships with food donors, supermarkets, wholesalers, farmers, manufacturers and community organisations, we rescue surplus food and redirect it to people experiencing hardship.

This approach helps:

  • Reduce food waste sent to landfill
  • Lower environmental impact
  • Provide nutritious meals and hampers to vulnerable individuals and families
  • Maximise the value of donated resources

By rescuing food, we are helping both people and the planet.

Sustainable Food Relief

Our team prepares thousands of meals each week using rescued and donated ingredients wherever possible.

We aim to:

  • Utilise food resources efficiently
  • Minimise waste throughout our operations
  • Support healthy eating and nutrition education
  • Provide dignified access to food for those in need

Our focus is not only on feeding people today but helping create healthier and stronger communities tomorrow.

Community Garden Initiative

As part of our sustainability journey, St Merkorious Charity is developing a Community Garden Program at our new distribution centre.

The garden will:

  • Grow fresh produce for community meals and hampers
  • Provide educational opportunities in gardening and sustainability
  • Support mental health and wellbeing through community participation
  • Create opportunities for volunteer engagement and skills development
  • Explore future social enterprise opportunities through the sale of produce and value-added products

The garden will become a living example of community-led sustainability.

Reducing Operational Waste

We continually seek ways to reduce waste across our facilities and programs through:

  • Recycling initiatives
  • Responsible disposal practices
  • Reuse of materials wherever practical
  • Composting and organic waste reduction initiatives
  • Sustainable procurement and sourcing practices

These efforts help us operate more efficiently while reducing our environmental footprint.

Creating Social Sustainability

Sustainability is also about people.

Through our outreach services, training programs, volunteer opportunities, and community activities, we help build:

  • Social connection
  • Employment pathways
  • Skills development
  • Community participation
  • Long-term resilience

Programs such as hospitality training, barista courses, community engagement initiatives, and volunteer experiences help individuals gain confidence, develop practical skills, and strengthen their connection to the community.

Sustainable Partnerships

We work closely with corporate partners, government agencies, educational institutions and community organisations to create meaningful impact.

Together, we are building sustainable solutions that address:

  • Food insecurity
  • Homelessness
  • Social isolation
  • Community wellbeing
  • Environmental responsibility

Our partners play a critical role in helping us create measurable and lasting change.

Looking Ahead

As St Merkorious Charity continues to grow, sustainability will remain at the heart of our decision-making.

From food rescue and community gardens to social enterprise initiatives and environmental stewardship, we are committed to creating a future where people, communities and the environment can thrive together.

Every meal served, every volunteer engaged and every partnership formed helps create a more sustainable future for all.

Together, we are reducing waste, strengthening communities, and creating lasting impact.
